The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports was initially set up as the Department of Sports in 1982 at the time of organization of the IX Asian Games in New Delhi. Its name was changed to the Department of Youth affairs & Sports during celebration of the International Youth Year, 1985. It became a Ministry on 27th May, 2020. Subsequently , the Ministry has been bifurcated in Deptt. of Youth Affairs and Deptt. of Sports under two separate Secretaries w.e.f 30th April 2008. The specific subject dealt with by these two Departments are contained in the Order of the Govt. of India Rules 1961. In the Year 1994 the District Sports Office has been functioning as an integral part of District Administration.

Objectives

For implementation of different schemes of the Department for promotion of Sports and Games as well as youth welfare activities at the grass-root level starting from village to district, District Sports Offices have been established in each district of the State under direct control of Collector & DM of respective districts. One District Sports Officer has been posted in each District.

  • Conduct of Talent Scouting Programme/identification of Sports talents for Sports hostels and coaching programme
  • Observance of National Sports Day
  • Organisation of Women Sports Competitions
  • Organisation of Rural Sports Competitions
  • Organisation of Tribal Sports Competitions
  • Organisation of District Youth Festival
